Vern Steinbrecker

I was raised on a farm north of Hanna and spent most of my life in Calgary, employed in the agricultural field and construction.

My wood turning started about 15 years ago as a personal hobby. After 7 years of building skills, I eventually began showing my work at the Farmers’ Markets around Calgary.

Upon retiring 3 years ago, I moved to Sundre, Alberta where I am continuing to make wooden objects and enjoying the small local farmers markets here. I buy most of my wood, but if I find an interesting piece of wood I try to turn it into someone else’s treasure.

As I was born and raised in Red Deer I’ve grown up seeing the gradual growth and expansion of the city limits. My real love is the heritage buildings with the truly distinctive character and charm from our not too distant past. I always want to capture the essence in my photography as well as manipulating the colours to create something different but maintain the true heritage and character.

Being commissioned to photograph homes, barns, and people with their animals has been another way to express my creativity in a very unique way. As a member of Central Alberta Photographic Society I’ve received many awards including Photographer of the Year.

My Grandparents farmed near Markerville and I spent many holidays visiting and enjoying the farm life. Markerville has always held a special place in my heart so I’m very excited to be able to attend this show.

I have enjoyed designing jewelry that is beautiful and wearable since 2012, and make all the items myself. My inventory is continuously changing and expanding, depending upon what inspires me each day. Working with multiple mediums, I have something for everyone!

August 8th was a great day, with sunshine and a little rain and gusts of wind to keep everyone on their toes.

Sunday the 9th was a perfect day with lots of sunshine, and visitors spending time browsing artwork and chatting with the artists. Thank you to all the artists who attended: Amanda Frost, Christina Ekman, David Todd, Doug Taylor, Ed & Marlene Potter, Raevyn Berg, Ron Bradley, and Vern Steinbrecker.
A last minute addition to the group, Derick Dunphy, set up for the second half of the day, and some of the local car club members even drove by to say “Hi” in style!
